Undo and Redo Shortcuts

I use these shortcuts quite a bit, not even just in writing papers but even when using a web browser. They're pretty easy to understand, undo does whatever you did last, redo restores something after you undo it.

CTRL+Y= Redo
CTRL+Z= Undo

Ninite

Ninite is a very useful website when you buy or build a new computer. Just check every program you want to install then at the bottom click "get installer." This website has a lot of useful programs on it that I recommend as well and is much easier and faster then checking every website individually. If you're interested in it click the link which is the first word of this post.

Skype

This is a program that has gained a lot of popularity but surprisingly many people still don't know about it. Skype is the best video chat program and it's free. It's easy to use, just make an account, sign in, then add your friends. You'll obviously need a microphone and camera to use this effectively, I'd recommend one that has them both built in to make things easier. Here is a link to the page to download Skype.

Another set of useful shortcuts for paper editing are selecting all, one word, or one character (letter, number, symbol). Hold CTRL and hit A to select all, Hold CTRL and press the right/left arrows to go between words, and hold CTRL+Shift and press the right/left arrows to select a word at a time, finally Hold Shift and press right/left arrows to select one character. I posted this again at the bottom for it will be a little easier to read.

CTRL+A= Select all
CTRL+Left/Right= Go from Word to Word
CTRL+Shift+Left/Right= Select one Word at a time
Shift+Left/Right= Select one character at a time

Copy and Paste Shortcuts

Something that can make using a computer much quicker and easier are shortcuts. Copy and paste are used very often espeically when editing a paper. To help speed that up I recommend using simple shortcuts. Cut, Copy, and Paste are all right next to each other on the keyboard, just hold CTRL and press X for Cut, C for Copy, and V for paste. I posted this again at the bottom for it will be a little easier to read.

CTRL+X= Cut
CTRL+C= Copy
CTRL+V= Paste

Mozilla Firefox/Google Chrome

Internet Explorer is always behind in the web browser race without having good security, quality extensions, or the speed of other browsers. The best choice is generally dependent on the user, I prefer Firefox but it can be a little bit of a memory hog so for slower computers I generally recommend Google Chrome. Neither choice is wrong in my mind. For more information visit http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ to download Firefox and https://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/make/download.html?brand=CHMB to download Google Chrome.

Google Docs

Something great to go along with Open Office is Google Docs. Google Docs has a free document, presentation, spreadsheet, form, and drawing editor. The main difference is there is no download required and you can keep all of your files online, access them on any computer online, email them as a word format or other format, and share them with people you know. It's very useful if you're on the go. The features aren't quite as plentiful as Open Office but this is a great alternative, or even one that can be used effectively with Open Office. You can access Google Docs with a Google account which is easy to register for, and Google has a lot of good services. You can access Google Docs with this link http://docs.google.com

For those who are looking for a good office program but can't afford Microsoft Office there is a great alternative that is free. Open Office is a very useful program that features a text, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, and a database editor. All of them have a lot of good features and are reliable programs. They also will save in the Microsoft format for anything you need to turn in digitally for a class.

Slickdeals

I decided to go in a little different direction today, this is a website for anyone who loves shopping online. http://slickdeals.net/ is a very useful website if you want to find good deals. On the front page they list the best daily deals the users find, on the side are popular deals. I've used this website for years now and have bought many things much cheaper then in stores and saved a lot of money.

AVG Free Anti-virus

AVG offers a very nice Antivirus program for free. Out of all of the anti-viruses I've used I've not only found it very effective, It's free and not annoying like some other anti-viruses that constantly bother you. Go to their website to check it out http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage. Their is also a paid version, you can look at the features and decide if they are worth it yourself but the free antivirus is almost a must for most computer users.
